Breakout Rooms

  • moderator moves students into separate rooms where students can collaborate using their own private audio, whiteboard, application sharing, video, etc….
  • can be set up ahead of time or be created on the fly
  • content can be loaded into the rooms ahead of time

Teaching Tip: Breakout rooms are a way to encourage more student interaction through small groups activities, peer tutoring, or one-on-one work

Point to Consider: Activity in breakout rooms is not captured in recordings.

Shared, Interactive Whiteboard

  • main presentation window
  • present slides or use as a work area where you and your participants can write, draw, or type

Point to Consider: Text typed on the whiteboard does not scroll and can be “lost” on the screen; use the text box feature (available in v. 8.0) to eliminate this problem.

not surenot surenotsure Full Duplex Audio

  • up to four people can talk at any time during a session (default setting is one person)

Tteaching Tip: Encourage students to use the audio configuration wizard before the session is scheduled to begin so their microphone & speaker settings are configured properly.

Point to Consider: If more than one person is speaking or if the meeting is in a classroom or conference room, headsets or echo-cancellation microphones are recommended to cut down on echo.

Instant Messaging

  • moderator and participants can send a text message to everyone, selected participants, or to one participant in the session.

Teaching Tip: Instant messaging is great for introductions, brainstorming, questions, & comments.

Point to Consider: Direct/instant messaging can be a distraction for some students; use presentation mode to help those students focus on content being presented. (Students who aren’t distracted by direct messaging may opt out of presentation mode independently.)

Application Sharing

  • share a desktop application with all participants have another person control your desktop or application, or view and control another participant’s desktop or application
  • moderators can grant participants permission to share an application also so that a student can lead discussion

Teaching Tip: Application sharing is useful for demonstrating steps to access applications necessary for your class, such as accessing Blackboard or learning how to use a feature in MS Word or for letting students peer teach.

Live Webcam Video

  • video broadcast and can give permission to students to do the same if they have a web camera

Multi-Media Content Delivery

  • share multimedia files, such as a movie or song clip, or a URL

Teaching Tip: As a timesaver, load multimedia files to access during your Elluminate session  in the Multimedia Library before your session begins.

Point to Consider: Students must have appropriate players installed on their computers to view some of these files.

File Transfer

  • upload files to server and share with participants; URLs can be loaded here too

Teaching Tip: Use the file transfer tool to distribute handouts before, during, or at the end of a session.

Point to Consider: Students will be prompted to accept the files; let them know so they aren’t caught off guard or confused.
